GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Black prepares a home brewed attack for White, 14.  b3!, seeking to open Queen side files to expose
White’s King. But White responds with highly imaginative moves with his Knights, eventually winning the
Bishop-pair advantage and going the Exchange up. Black presses on, but eventually realizes that the long-
range enemy Bishop-pair is more threatening than his Knights. He resigns a piece down.

GAME NOTES

(a)  Svidler thinks 11.  Kb1 was better. Score 3 pts for this move.
(b)  Both 12. Nd5 Bxd5 13.  exd5 a5 and 12.  Ne2 a5 13.  Kb1 a4 14.  Nbc1 are playable but have unclear
consequences. But take 3 pts. for both moves if you chose them.
(c)  Black should have prevented the Knight from intruding at b6 with 12…Nbd7.
(d)  14…dxc5 is met by 15.  Qxd8 Bxd8 16.  Nxa8 Nbd7 17.  g5 Nh5 18.  Bb5 and White is winning.
(e)  Winning the advantage of the Two Bishops for himself, with more booty to follow.
(f)   What wonders can this one Knight do! Now he steals the Exchange.
(
g)  Score 3 pts also for the desperado capture 20.  Nxh7.
(h)  Giving back the pawn to extend the scope of his Rook and a2-Bishop.
(i)   More stubborn was 31…Nxd6 32.  Bc6 and White will take longer to win. This blunder puts White a piece
   ahead.
