GAME HIGHLIGHTS

White’s play compromises Black’s Kingside pawn structure, with the result that the King cannot safely
castle on either wing. White proceeds to post his pieces with a view to sacrificing to shatter further the limp
pawns and expose the uncastled enemy King. When the inevitable sacrifice does come, Black’s
disorganized pieces cannot come to the rescue.

GAME NOTES

a) Take 5 pts. also for the interesting 12.  g4!?, offering an exchange of g-pawns: 12…e5 13.  fxe5 Nxg4
 14.  Qe2 and White has an edge.
b) Black is forced to cripple his pawn structure: 13…Bxf6 14.  e5 Be7 15.  exd6 gives White initiative along
  the d-file.
c) Black cannot keep the pawn he wins by 17…e5? 18.Nf5 Qxe3 exf4 20.Nf5, as his own scattered pawns
  will be easy pickings.
d) Threatening 21.  Bxe6! to which Black cannot answer 21…fxe6?? 22.  Nxe6+ wins the Queen.
e) Score 8 pts. also for 21.  f5 which may bring 21…e5   22.  Nf3 Rc8   23.  Rg1 and White is ready to open
the g-file and attack the King.
f)  Avoiding 22…Bxe4   23.  Nxe6+ fxe6 24.  Qxe6 Bg6 25.  Rhg1 Bh5 26.  Qg8+ Rxg8   27.  Rxg8 mate!
g) 24…Bxe4? 25.  Bxe6 spells unstoppable mate. If 24…Bc8, then 25.  Rd5! forces open the diagonal
  whether Black accepts (25…exd5   26.  Bxd5) or refuses 25…any   26.  Rxf5+!).
h) The Queen is lost anyway, e.g.  29…Ke8   30.  Qg6+ Kf8   31.  Rf6+ Qxf6   32.  Qxf6+ Ke8   33.  Bb5+ Bc6
  34.  Bxc6 mate.
